I work with teams building and deploying technology who need someone who can reason through hard questions to justifiable answers. My methods were developed at Oxford, Princeton, Stanford, and Leiden, inside Google's AI teams, and in European tech policy. More on that background.

A charged 30 to 60 minute conversation on hard decisions, preferably with a brief from you beforehand and a written analysis from me afterwards.

Ethical analysis

A commissioned written briefing on a set of hard questions, tracing how specific technical choices produce a specific outcome and how to change them. Typically, we'd collaborate for about two months, checking in every two weeks and hosting a workshop where that helps. I deliver a detailed report with a bibliography your team can work from.

Designing ethics boards, escalation procedures, and guidelines engineers can apply directly. Advising on existing and emerging responsibilities, meaningful approaches to ethical review, and for foresight teams to improve their operations and decision-making.

Moral imagination workshops

A peer-reviewed workshop method, developed at Google and run more than seventy times. We use your team's own technology as the focus, and participants learn by reasoning through a decision the team already faces, which is what gives them the legitimacy to act on the outcome.

For labs, universities, and funders building AI into scientific practice, I help teams work through how they can use AI as a tool for discovery without compromising the values that make a result trustworthy, such as rigor, reproducibility, and responsibility.
